Use of a surge protector (Rs. 7000 on the market, Rs. 1000 to make if you know electronics) would have saved all your equipment. The thing is, having money to buy stuff just isn't enough now a days. You have to have the knowledge to use them.
My current Config for power line

Basically the 40ohm resistors prevent ANY surge from coming through the phone line because lightning hates resistance. And while all the other phones in the area don't have resistors installed the lightning surge will just go through there ones! Not mine (well it does come but the resistance will break down the main surge into heat).
Basicaly I have more surge protection than that the President's House does
