I want to start a couple of guide/information/resource threads where I want to keep updating the information on the first post (as and when new stuff comes out or when old URLs become invalid etc..). Right now I can’t do that after a certain number of days. So the only way to keep the thread alive is by posting modifications as new posts. This can be very confusing for anyone wanting to find out the up-to-date information, cos then he/she has to go though the entire post to find out each and every change.

I think this will be useful for many users who have guides and other type of informative threads to consolidate all there information and keep them alive and up-to-date.

I really don’t see a downside to removing the editing limit. And most other forums out there supports it. AFAIK I know it can be done, at least the time limit can be increased to a very large value like 1 year, which is better than what is there now....

I already sent a PM to GTRZ, hope he sees it; this thread is to have other people's opinions and make the request "sort of" official.. i had a similar thread few weeks back, but it went unanswered.. Hence the new thread.

What do you guys think ?

edit feature does a big change to the data base..it seems like a small thing but when the db holds sutch data the servers cant handle it..

UNLESS there is a way to keep all sequential edits intact, otherwise there are chances of abuse... like someone could go against forum rules and could easily deny after editing!

You don’t understand what I’m saying. For example I made a new thread yesterday to post latest application releases and updates available for the Nokia 5800 XM phone. I can’t keep that post up-to-date with new releases if there is a time limit on editing the post. So whatever updates I want to share will have to be posted as new posts after the first 24hrs. This is not a very good way of maintaining guides. What about correcting invalid URLs ? Sometimes images and links to files get deleted or broken, if I cant edit the post then there is no way to fix them. You are looking at the problem in a completely different side...

I’m not exactly sure about the DB structure of this forum, but I assume there is a table for posts where one row corresponds to a post. So editing a post means updating that row, I don’t see how editing that row after some time can put any extra burden on the database than editing a newly created post.

I don’t get your point, right now you can edit a post up to 24 hours. So what you are saying can happen even now. I’m sure you can come up with a couple more trivial reasons for not letting the posts to be edited after 24 hours, but I don’t think any of those can create major problems. I’m a member of many other large non SL forums where forum rules are much much striker than here, but I’m yet to come across a forum that has a 24hr time limit.

here is my suggestion bro, do add more posts to the same thread:i.e- applications, games, themse etc, list it down and get the link of the particular post from the upper right corner of the post number, then PM GTRZ and request to update the first post, he will help you, im dead sure:yes:;)

Sure it could, but it may not be widespread!
