Three persons were killed and 33 others injured when a Polgahawela bound Colombo train rammed into the rear of another train heading in the same direction for Kandy.
Those killed were the driver and his assistant of the Polgahawela bound train and a foreign national, Sri Lanka Railway spokesman said.
The incident took place around 5.00 pm at Alawwa Junction on Saturday.
Divaina correspondent for Alawwa, Anil Sudasinghe who was at the scene of the accident told Sandesaya that the observation car of the Kandy bound train was completely destroyed.
The injured persons have been admitted to the Alawwa and Kurunegala hospitals.
Officials said that rescue operations are underway and suspect that there are passengers trapped inside the wreckage.
