Train derails at Hikkaduwa bridge; Two dead

A Matara bound train had derailed on the Hikkaduwa bridge at approximately 12.40p.m. Initial reports claimed that some of the passengers have fallen into the river. Two deaths were also reported while the injured were rushed to the Galle Hospital. The train was travelling from Kandy to Matara.

UPDATE:

3 killed, 5 missing in train derailment over Hikkaduwa bridge

At least three passengers have been killed and five others are reported missing when the Matara bound train was derailed on the Hikkaduwa bridge over the river on Monday afternoon, Police said.

The train was coming from Anuradhapura when the incident took place at around 12.45 p.m.

Eight passengers injured in the derailment have been rushed to the Karapitiya hospital, while a search is underway for those who have gone missing.
