As the two elephant calves ‘Raju’ and Sindhu’ that were forcefully removed by Diyawadana Nilame Nilanga Dela Bandara a few days ago are to be handed over to Malwaththe and Asgiriya temples ceremoniously by the President on the 7th of next month the two calves had been punished with poles to tame them say reports. They have also been burnt with heated iron bars state these reports. In a media meeting held today Mr. Jagath Gunawardene of the Young Animal Lovers Society said the mother elephants of the two calves are acting in a very aggressive mood in the orphanage. The issue we have is how did they remove two tusked elephant calves (tuskers) when they were given approval to remove two elephant calves.” Mr. Pradeep Niyangala, officer in charge of elephants belonging to the Temple of the Tooth says whether the two calves are elephant calves or tusked elephant calves has not been established yet.
