As the two elephant calves ‘Raju’ and Sindhu’ that were forcefully removed by Diyawadana Nilame Nilanga Dela Bandara a few days ago are to be handed over to Malwaththe and Asgiriya temples ceremoniously by the President on the 7th of next month the two calves had been punished with poles to tame them say reports. They have also been burnt with heated iron bars state these reports.
In a media meeting held today Mr. Jagath Gunawardene of the Young Animal Lovers Society said the mother elephants of the two calves are acting in a very aggressive mood in the orphanage. He said the two calves had been removed on an approval from the cabinet. Speaking further he said, “the cabinet approval was for two elephant calves. However, two tusked elephant calves had been removed. The issue we have is how did they remove two tusked elephant calves (tuskers) when they were given approval to remove two elephant calves.”
Mr. Pradeep Niyangala, officer in charge of elephants belonging to the Temple of the Tooth says whether the two calves are elephant calves or tusked elephant calves has not been established yet. However, both these calves had tiny tusks and the officer in charge of elephants in the Temple of the Tooth strangely is not aware that calves with tusks are tuskers or tusked elephants and other elephants don’t have tusks.
Mr. Jagath Gunawardene speaking to the media said if the removal of the calves from the orphanage was not illegal and if they remain healthy and well they could be shown to the media and veterinarians. In response the office in charge of elephants in the Temple of the tooth had said the two calves would not be shown to anyone until they are officially handed over to the two Malwatta and Asgiriya temples by the President.
However, reports say the two elephant calves are being tortured as they are behaving violently as they are missing their mothers. It is reported that the two calves have been burnt with heated iron bars. The Young Animal Lovers Society has issued several photographs to the media showing the two calves being hidden. One photograph shows a person carrying a pole to hit the calves.
The President or any other authority has not taken any action to prevent the inhuman act carried out in the name of the Temple of the Tooth. Environmentalists and animal lovers say no action has been taken to stop the dastardly act as the removal of the calves had been carried out with the knowledge of the President.

    that is so weird opinion
y think they get bad treatmnent bro?
they are treated like humans in dalada perahara
dont y know about raja atha?
this is a 1000 year old tradition
which brought the realationship between elephants and humans close

Do you think Lord Buddha would approve all this? just for a procession of his tooth?

True its our culture, but how do you know for sure what the Elephant feels.. do they at least measure the stress levels of the animals before or after the Perahera? (I dont know whether they really do this, if they do at least that's better)

What is this? having an innocent animal wear wires all over the body and made to walk along the streets... I've seen from my own eyes the guy poking the animal just to control it, this is also Animal Slavery if you look at it..

Then again... its my personal view.. yours might be different!
