Ubuntu can be installed under vista..You won't have to format..but if you install it in another partiotion as a separated OS you won't be able to log in to Vista..If you want to boot both OS s then you will have to install it under windows or You must have ubuntu 8.10..(it can recognize vista)

You can install ubuntu on a separate partition, and when you start you machine, GRUB will ask with which OS you want to continue (either vista or ubuntu). you can have both os in one machine. good luck. (ubuntu has some other options as well)
