There are alternatives like OpenOffice and Gimp, but maybe not as feature rich as Windows apps. If you just want to see how it looks and feels then use it as a Live CD first. A live CD is kind of an already installed image of the OS where you can boot directly from the CD without installing anything on the PC. The standard Ubuntu CD also has the LiveCD feature. However, performance is slow because it runs off the CD. You cannot install drivers, and whatever configuration settings you change will be lost after a reboot (because the OS is not on the HDD).
