Ubuntu is free, no need of a license. But you cannot install Windows applications like MS Office and Photoshop on it. There are alternatives like OpenOffice and Gimp, but maybe not as feature rich as Windows apps.

If you just want to see how it looks and feels then use it as a Live CD first. A live CD is kind of an already installed image of the OS where you can boot directly from the CD without installing anything on the PC. The standard Ubuntu CD also has the LiveCD feature. However, performance is slow because it runs off the CD. You cannot install drivers, and whatever configuration settings you change will be lost after a reboot (because the OS is not on the HDD). But it is a good place to start Linux without taking risks.

    Download Ubuntu

  • P.S. - You can done anything and everything in Ubuntu which you do in Windows. You can run EXE files on Ubuntu too.[/B] Means you can install virtually any MS Windows software on Ubuntu. Besides there are so much alternative free applications such as

    Photoshop = GIMP
    MS Office = OpenOffice, KOffice
Media Player = VLC, Totem, Banshee, Amarock Etc.
    Maya/3d max = Blender

Even now it supports Sinhala. If you install the Sinhala, you can operate Ubuntu in Sinhala language...

    you can run

    photoshop (with wine)
MS Word (but Open office is built in, its way better)
OpenGL games (lyk Counter strick, Amaricas Army)

but you will soon find FOSS softs are better than any propritory one.. yes they copied us :)

Some Windows applications work on WINE (it is sort of like an emulator/virtual machine). But not all applications work with Wine (especially games,Some games do work, but too slow). There is a Firefox version for Linux, and there are other apps you can use instead of using Windows apps. VLC for Linux is a good media player, and there are plenty of multi protocol messengers, Skype etc.. If you are a basic user then Ubuntu will work just fine.

P.S My personal favorite is OpenSuse, because the UI looks better

    eheh
Wine = Wine Is Not an Emulator :P

    For games, i'm using Cedega

Open suse is gud but Novell has sm ethical probs. :D, ppl who LOVE FOSS wan't use NOVELL products anymore. buts Yes it has gr8 Usability

and if you are looking for the usability and Nice look. without trubles (out of the box codecs).. go for Linux Mint. its the best (recent update "Gloria" was two weeks ago )
