The film opens with a documentary-style series of interviews that introduce the situation. Twenty years before, an alien ship is seen coming towards Earth and arrives above Johannesburg, South Africa. It hovers above the city for three months without any contact; eventually humans take the initiative and cut into the ship. They discover a large group of aliens who are malnourished and sick. The aliens are later assessed as apparently being all ?workers?, with their leadership mysteriously missing (it is hypothesized that a plague may have wiped out all of the leadership-caste). Grainy footage shows part of the ship (supposed to be a command module) falling to Earth, but nobody has been able to find it, leaving the ship inoperable.

District 9 movie, a science-fiction film directed by Neill Blomkamp, narrates the story of an alien species that is forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth. It has been three decades since the aliens first approached Earth looking for refuge. Since then they have been living in temporary homes allotted to them in South Africa's District 9. Now, a private company named Multi-National United (MNU) that is least interested in their welfare, controls the aliens. MNU is eyeing the tremendous profits they can earn, if they succeed in making operational the amazing weaponry of the aliens', which is proving difficult as it can be activated only with alien DNA. Soon the hostility between the aliens and the humans reaches its peak level when Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley), a field operative for MNU, is infected by a mysterious virus that causes his DNA to change. This makes him not only the most wanted but the most valued person and he has only one place to hide – District 9.
