Arun Dias Bandaranaike is a Jehovah's witness - Christian missionary.
His body language as a compere in today's inaugural session of the UN Day of Vesak 2017 did not reflect great warmth towards the subject of Buddhism. There was no enthusiasm in his choice of words. This is to be expected given his close ties to an aggressive evangelical organisation.
The content of his presentation differed qualitatively from the warm glowing presentation made in Sinhala by the other compere a lady and a Buddhist.
The question arises why at a major International Buddhist function, noted Christian activists are chosen to compere?
Are there a lack of Buddhist comperes in pre- dominantly Buddhist Sri Lanka?
A compere plays a critical role in animating the audience.
Arun Dias Bandaranaike failed in that task very badly.
There was hardly any praise for Buddhism or the Buddha in the manner of the lady compere in Sinhala. Instead Arun Dias Bandaranaike adopted the multi - cultural line of speaking about inclusiveness, which was not relevant to the occasion.
Buddhism has always been an accommodating religion. We do not lessons on this score from non - Buddhists at a Buddhist function.
We must learn lessons from the lapses of comperes whose heart is not with the theme of the subject matter.
