The latest international spokesman for the pro-LTTE lobby is South Africa's Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Of course there is no question that the likes of Bishop Rayappu Joseph and the LTTE lobby in S. Africa have taken Tutu for a ride and cleverly manipulated him into making an absurd Statement against GOSL when the latter is threatened by a terrorist outfit that is guilty of the very accusations he is making against this county.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu
Nevertheless it is crass ingratitude on the part of a so-called religious figure to condemn a State that has right through supported in world forums his country's struggle against Apartheid and minority white rule.
Sri Lanka never gave diplomatic recognition to white-ruled South Africa and continuously expressed solidarity with the African National Congress (ANC) in which Tutu played a prominent role along with former South African President Nelson Mandela.
Archbishop Tutu, without an iota of evidence makes wild charges the Sri Lankan State of torturing and kidnapping its own people as a matter of official policy.
He is lambasting Sri Lanka for critiquing former High Commissioner for human rights, Louise Arbour whose track record was recently exposed last month when she was accused by a senior attorney with the UN Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) to have covered up the murders of the Presidents of Rwanda and Burundi and many of other persons.
Tutu is now calling for Sri Lanka's defeat when GOSL runs for re-election to the UN human rights council, in New York on May 21.
He says, "If Sri Lanka is defeated this year that will be important not just for the Sri Lankan human rights leaders who, at great personal risk, have called for Sri Lanka's defeat, and for Sri Lankan civil society. In combination with the humiliating defeat last year of Belarus, it will send an important signal for the future: governments with track records of serious human rights abuses do not belong on a body set up to protect the victims of such abuses."
