    Who is an incel?

"Incel" is a shorthand term for "involuntary celibate."

While it literally refers to someone who is sexually inactive despite wanting to be, the term is most commonly used to describe a specific online subculture of mostly men who share a deep resentment and hostility toward women and society.
Here is a breakdown of the different contexts of the term:

    1. The Literal Definition
At its most basic level, an incel is a person who is unable to find a sexual or romantic partner despite desiring one. In this broad sense, it simply describes a state of being, rather than a specific group.

    2. The Online Subculture
The term is now widely associated with an internet community (found on forums like 4chan, Reddit, and Discord) that is characterized by extreme misogyny, pessimism, and self-pity.

    • Ideology: The community generally believes that physical appearance ("genetic luck") is the sole determinant of romantic success.
    • The "Black Pill": Many members subscribe to a philosophy called the "black pill," which is the fatalistic belief that they are doomed to loneliness because they are not physically attractive, and that self-improvement is futile.
    • Misogyny: Members often express hostility toward women, referring to them with derogatory terms and blaming them for the men's lack of sexual success. They frequently categorize men as either "Chads" (attractive, successful men) or "normies" (average men), viewing them as enemies.
    3. Origins
The term was actually coined by a woman named Alana (known only by her first name) in 1993 when she created a website titled "Alana’s Involuntary Celibacy Project." It was originally intended to be a supportive, inclusive space for lonely people of any gender. However, the term was eventually co-opted by male-dominated forums that became increasingly toxic and radicalized.

    4. Violence and Extremism
The incel community has been designated as a violent extremist ideology by various law enforcement and counter-terrorism agencies globally. This is because some self-identified incels have committed mass murders and acts of violence targeting women and the general public.

It is important to note that simply being a virgin or being single does *not* make someone an incel. The term is generally reserved for those who identify with the hateful ideology and online community associated with it.
