The UNP today blamed the government for incuring unnecessary expenditure on events such as bidding for the Commonwealth Games when the country cannot maintain the farmers pension scheme.
UNP Spokesman Gayantha Karunatillake told a a news conference today that the sports sector was facing a severe crisis as the Sri Lanka Cricket cannot even maintain the grounds and have been forced to hand over it to the military to maintain them.
"It was during the UNP rule that several sports persons such as Susanthika Jayasinha, Damayanthi Dharsha, Shriyani Kulawansa, Wimaladasa and Sanath Jayasuriya came from the rural areas", he said.
He said that the government has now effected an unofficial censorship as well to prevent the people knowing the truth.
