The United National Party (UNP) this morning handed over a petition to the Human Rights Commission (HRC) seeking its intervention to look into violations of the rights of the workers of the Free Trade Zone (FTZ) who were subject to excessive use of force by the Police when they were engaged in a protest recently.

The petition was handed over by a delegation from the UNP which included the Party’s General Secretary MP Tissa Attanayake, Ravi Karunanayaka and Jayalath Jayawardena.

Mr.Attanayaka said that the decision to petition the HRC was to seek recourse against Police brutality as well as non payment of any compensation for those affected.

One person was killed as a result of the Police crackdown on the protesters who had gathered to voice their anger against the proposed private sector pension Bill.
