UNP won’t allow one-man polls

The main opposition UNP said yesterday it would field a candidate for the next presidential election to prevent anyone being elected uncontested.
UNP front-liner Lakshman Kiriella said it was essential for the presidential election or for that matter any other election to be conducted in accordance with the Constitution.
He said it would be a breach of people’s democratic rights if it happened any other way.
“The UNP will face a future election with confidence and from a point of strength. We are eager to face any electoral challenge,” Mr. Kiriella said.
The UNP statement came in the wake of UPFA activists passing resolutions at district and and provincial level calling for the extension of President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s term of office without holding an election while public rallies were also being held to promote similar sentiments.

I guess an election is mandatory. But the result is obvious.
The election is a compulsory cost that has to be done formality sake.

This is a very generalized view. tehre can be sudden shocks. You never know.

I think King Mahinda is afraid of the Election.

He is taken for granted now.
He seems to get
very luke warm response
even here.
He also has lost enthusiasm and vigor he used to have.


Ranil is not good enough
even to be considered.

King Mahinda is very lucky that
UNP lost
leaders like
Lalith Athulathmudali - Gamini Dissanayaka
early.
