I had the same doubts macho so i was checking all the universities for the solutions. There is a technique call Laser Magnum cutting . in that technique the drill head is not the thing that cuts the Soil . the laser been directed through magnum Plumb is cutting through and drill head just washing the Place and converting the Mud in to the Dust. that's what ppl doing when the Oil plantations in rocks. cos any drill head can't cut through the Stones without servicing . So i think this weapon has the same Technique and who knows they invent some better solution for the job.

Concept wise its fine, but we don't know enough about this to actually discuss about it because there could be many variables!

For example, guiding a warhead through Air and Water isn't really a problem but guiding it through earth is unimaginable, how do you set a course for this to travel through earth, yes it will melt the rocks and stuff but not all of earth's core consist of rocks, there are voids too and a 1cm difference off course from somewhere makes huge difference at the other end!
