in Short Ethical Hacker is someone who hacks without breaking up ethics.
or maybe u can say hack not only for your benefit. thinking like that way every hacker who stolen games for cracking are ethical hackers, and hack for your country is another way to become like that one, or hack for justice is another way.
to be a ethical hacker u should have a good knowledge about networking concepts ,programming concepts ,cryptography such as breaking the SSL protections while data is passing which is called Man in the Middle Attack, art of DOS attack ,ability eavesdropping , phishing ,etc.. so basically ethical hackers are same as selfish hackers or criminal hackers thinking about skills but their purposes are different.
somehow hackers are easy to caught relatively crackers since they directly connect with the victim's source throw something called tracing ,they find your IP then your ISP and call to them if they refuse to give ur information they won't hesitate to go for the justice then obviously u can be caught unless you hacked from a cyber cafe (of course if people in cyber cafe note down ur ID card number and data such as information u are lost but if they don't u are free) so careful when u hack cause the punishments are more than you realized depend on the where you hacked.
the best way is always hack from a cyber cafe not from ur own connection or someone u know.
