Chief of Defence Staff General Sarath Fonseka in his final address before retiring from service today said that politics must be kept out of the Army. He noted the significant absence of the three armed forces at his farewell ceremony. He also met President Mahinda Rajapaksa today.
General Fonseka later visited the war memorial at Parliament grounds and paid tribute to the war heroes. Speaking to reporters there the General said he will now begin a new life as a civilian. Asked if he will enter politics the General said he will decide that in the next 2 or 3 days.

i still say fonseka will contest the g.e as a slfp candidate. p.e.he wont contest because he knows ranils mind, and he cannot be in the same satage together with ranil who allmost gave a part of s.l. to prabaha, mangale failed politician, hackeem the jumping frog and mano the big talker. jvp allmost dead.if he really wants to stop corruption thuggary wastage etc etc become the prime minister.mahinda says he also wants to stop what fonseka wants to stop, and mahinda would agree because it is also good for him. perhaps mahinda has probably realized it is not that very rosy for him. ranjit de mel berlin

The problem of mahinda and sarath fonseka are both want power to control others and don't like to obey anyone. So both these attitudes are not do any good for Sri Lanka. As rulers of the country we shouldorder these two to be united.

President Mahinda has been reportedly said to the media that "people of this country have lot of gratitude and will not elect SF as President in any case". I am intrigued. S0 how come President is expecting from its citizens whenever his subordinates or for that matter MR fails to show a token of gratitude to this war hereo. Shame on you all.

He is asking for politics to be kept out of the Army when he had his head deep into it. Shows none of the forces really appreciate your self centeredness by forgetting that it was not a ‘one’ man show but rather a team effort. Hope you and the President could put your differences aside for the sake of the country but the crack is always going to show.

We thank you General for your service to this Nation. I suppose that the 17th amendment to the constitution has provision for that. Wishing you and the President all the best in order to take the contry forward.

Farewell, General. You are a real role model Military General. We salute your chracter. In our hearts we consider you as a General, not as a politician. We do not recognize you as a politician. Do not go to hell from heaven. The spirit of Military, the comradeship when fighting pitch battles, resposability even under iminent death does not exist in Politics. Please take a holiday first then think, and think deep.

It would have been a miracle, if the thee commanders were present at the farewell ceremony. How could they face the Commander-in-Chief if they came to the function? This is the beginning of the end of a desciplined army.

Will any fool ever come forward to contest President Mahinda Rajapakse, just to hand over power to Ranil in six months time, unless he is a born idiot?

dm_comment.gif
Posted By: lal
Yes, General that is true. Party politics should be kept out of any military force. Thats why it is well disciplined for the moment. Once the party politics come in to this disciplined place every thing will finish. We know you are well disciplined gentleman, thats why you still keep your mouth shut by not giving any statement about politics

The people who did not bid farewell are guilty concious for the sins they have commited which lead to the exit of former Genaral. His excellancy the president has been poisoned by these elements. This shows their jelousy towards Genaral. These actions are soothing news to the pro tigers and anti government elements. The popularity of the present government is sure to be on the line.It will further detiriorate if President act fast and come to a settlement with the former Army chief.

Why not Ranil and Somawans among the well wishers? You have become the last cap for them. Please go and give some oxygen to these dying parties and at the same time get yourself defeated by MR.

It is most appropriate that the General thought it fit to make this exhortation on this occasion to keep politics out of the Army and the people will feel relieved and thankful to him for this wise action on his part. It appears that the three armed forces have boycotted the farewell ceremony most probably by collective decision. That is not a pleasant development. May be the reason is the General got embroiled in controversial circumstances arising from some of his statements in the Annexe to the letter of resignation.

The commander of three forces is the president. And the president is an elected politician by the nation. So does Sarath Fonseka wants to keep the right of the nation away from the Army? The Army is the Army of our motherland Sri Lanka. But it is not the Army of anyone else. If Mr. President had not given the right directions how will these people win the war? We should think about people like Dansil Kobbekaduwa. They were war heros in 80s. They would have finished this war during mid 80s if they were given with the right political direction at that time. If that happened then there would have not been a war in Sri Lanka to be finished by Sratha Fonseka under the right and brave direction he received from Mr. President.

But when you were in the service during the war agains LTTE you have very clearly mentioned in some interviews given to print and electronic media that President's political support paved the way immensely in wining military operation. Dear General it is politics in everywhere. Even to take revange owing to non-adherence of your personal expectation by the President you are also seems to be jumping on to politics. It is politics inside and outside but the important thing is whether you are using politics for the sake of bettermant of the country like what is done by the President. You are going to embrace with UNP & JVP for a very danagerous cause for the country.

If your Army general does not want powere over dignity why he ruled silence over the statements posted by the oposition. Was your Army general a person in charge or authorized for sole/ independent decion making? specially during the war. Wasn't him to use his line reports to design and plan the war strategies and put it forward to his direct reports ( your president I presume) for approval? If your president ( commandent of your Army) can deny or accept the proposals? Hence How come the Army general becomes a hero over the team effort and leadership over him supported the total course? You people are like jokers. Sri lanka has come out from a war prevailed more than 30 years. Your general was a leader under the regiment and he agreed with all orders by the previious governments. As a true hero/ patriot has he opposed the other malicious decisons taken by the previous regimes. Simply he can not because he is not authorized. But as a Hero he could have still show his herotic objection. So when the war is over as the leadership vision was to be, how come somebody under the king who lead the war becomes a hero? Your president has finished the war within 3 years which was there for 30 years. Why this was not done earlier? In case if your general be the president, can he lead a countries development other than another war, as the war is over and now its an economy to be developed and peoples lifs. Especially the north east who faced a laong lasting miltary regime?

you are right. You are a great warrior but politics is different. The losers who could not even nominate a candidate to take on the President are using you to get them in and throw you out. These people have nothing in common with you and will ruin your fame. Cannot somebody even the Maha Sangha do some reconciliation and stop the division of the Sinhalese? Lalith Wije.

This may be the reason you are leaving your present post. We should realise that it is not only the Army but Navy, Airforce and Police together beat the terrorists. I felt you are recognising only the Army in the LTTE war. Also people must understand no army ruler would be successful in becomig a president of a country. We have seen what happend/ and happening to military rule in Burma, Pakistan, China, Guinea and others. A president with a background of military will never be recognised by other allies and Sri Lankans have to make up their mind, if this is what they want. Ruling a country and ruling the military differ. So its yet to be seen which parties want him to run for presidency and would he accept knowing he has never been in politics. When the commander does not recognise the ariforce and navy, will they want to be present at his farewell?

dm_comment.gif

You are correct. But be careful of what you are doing. You are joining a bunch of losers who insulted you and the others fought you in 1989. If you join them they will destroy you and your political meetings will become a joke as they will say different things at variance to you and they will make you look foolish. The President is an excellent street fighter and will capitalise on this and your whole campaign will become a joke. You are now a hero, do not let these losers turn you into a loser because they jointly could not get 30% of the votes. Farewell great Warrior. Our sympathies with the defence force bosses, they are still govt.servants. If the General is entering the presidentioal fray, he must stand independently. No need to give into UNP's or Mano's questionaires. The General will get a a few hundred thousand votes by disalienating from the UNP JVP and the three wheel parties.Good Luck
