With 3G you can get higher speed ONLY IF YOU HAVE GOOD 3G COVERAGE in your area. otherwise you all you'll get is GPRS and huge bill.
One more issue is that 3G links all give private IPs which means you cannot use torrents or download from sites like Rapidshare (without doing various hacks).
Also 3G data packages are not unlimited so you are at a disadvantage there.
