Pandemonium reigned in the Waskaduwa area last evening after the news spread that an object from the sky had fallen to the sea creating a huge splash of water in mid sea.
The Kalutara North Police and officers from the Disaster Management Centre rushed to the scene and started investigations.
DMC Kalutara District Coordinator Major G.A. D. I. S. Samaranayaka told the Daily Mirror that the phenomenon
had been seen by a mother and her daughter. They had told him that the black object fell into the sea creating a mammoth splash of water of around 20 feet.
The Sri Lanka Air Force when inquired by the Disaster Management Center had confirmed that there was no air craft flying at that moment.
Kalutara police who recorded a statement from the witnesses said police divers were used to locate the object under the sea but nothing was found till late last night.
A Navy water jet also joined the investigations, police said.
The panicky people kept calling the Meteorology Department last evening inquiring about the incident a spokesman said. He said the department got a large number of phone calls from the people.
