How do I decide on a domain name?
We've covered that particular question in a lot of detail. But basically, you want a name with these characteristics:
    • Short: The maximum allowed size is 63 characters, but keep the name as short a possible. That's easier to type and remember.
    • Memorable: Names with special characters like hyphens and underbars are harder to describe to customers over the phone. Visitors aren't as used to them either and you may inadvertently send customers to your competitors if they have similar names without special characters!
    • Descriptive: Use your company name or a description of your product instead of company initials. People would instantly know what a site called "NeverPayIncomeTaxAgain" is about (although they might be suspicious). The full title is much more descriptive than the acronym "NPITA."
I typed the domain name into my browser and got an error message. Does that mean it's available?
Not always. Here are some possibilities:
    1. The domain name is available.
    2. The owner is designing the site but hasn't posted it yet.
    3. The owner purchased the name for future use.
    4. The owner bought the name, hoping to resell it at a profit.
Just because a name doesn't come up in a browser or a search engine is no guarantee of availability!
So how do I really check availability?
Most Web hosting companies and domain registrars let you check the availability of a domain name and it associated extensions (like .com or .org). Some even offer alternate versions if the name you searched on isn't available.
How do I register the name?
You'll need to use an accredited domain name registrar or one of their agents. Often, your Web hosting company has a relationship with a particular registrar that allows you to purchase your Web hosting account and domain name with one transaction.
That's easy, but it isn't always the cheapest option. You can buy a domain name from any authorized dealer; you aren't required to go through your Web hosting company. Prices for domain name registration vary widely - from as little as $8.00 to $35.00 for the same name!
This is one area where it pays to shop around!
What if the name I want is taken?
Go to the InterNIC WhoIs search page to find the owner. Perhaps he/she is willing to transfer the name to you. Transferring ownership is simple. It may not be cheap.
Some people buy hundreds of domain names on a speculative basis, hoping to sell them at a profit. Expect to pay a premium if you approach a speculator. Depending on the name's perceived value, you may have to pay hundreds, even thousands for it.
However, if an individual owner has just lost interest or decided not to use the name, you can probably get it for very little or nothing.
You can also investigate some relatively new services that allow you to immediately register a domain name if the owner doesn't renew it.
    • SnapNames: "Back order" a particular domain name. Automatically registers the domain in your name as soon as it becomes available.
    • NameWinner: Works on an auction model. You bid on particular domain names and only pay if you get the name.
    • ExpireFish: Uses a different model where you place money in your account to cover names you'd like to purchase and then the ExpireFish service goes "fishing" for the names. Allows users to monitor an unlimited number of names.
Note: NetMechanic isn't affiliated with any of these companies and we aren't endorsing their services. They're listed for information only.
Is it ok to buy an expired domain name?
That depends on the name's history. Find out why the previous owner doesn't want it anymore. The most obvious reasons are pretty benign:
    • Lost interest in maintaining the site.
    • Bought it on a speculative basis and couldn't sell it.
    • No longer running the online business.
A less obvious - and more dangerous reason - is that one or more search engines have permanently banned the site for spam tactics. Gambling and adult sites like to buy up domain names, link them together, and use every spam trick they know to try to boost the search engine rank.
Once the search engines discover the spam sites (it usually doesn't take long), the site (or sites) may have their URLs permanently banned. At that point, the URL is worthless to the spammers: they release it and buy more.
That means that no matter how hard you work at link popularity, how carefully you create content and optimize your pages for particular engines, you'll never achieve a high rank with the expired domain name.
Check out the history of expired domain names before you buy at the Wayback Machine. It's a historical search engine that maintains records of how Web sites appeared months - or even years - in the past.
Enter the domain name you're interested in into the search box and check its history. Steer clear of sites that appear to have consisted mainly of affiliate links, online gambling, or adult content.
Your domain name is your online identity so make sure that it's clear and memorable enough that visitors can find your site after their initial visit. But remember that most first-time visitors will find you through search engines. That's why it's important to optimize your page using Search Engine Power Pack. It's an online tool that gives you valuable advice about selecting keywords, writing META tags, optimizing your page for particular search engines, and submitting your site.
A good domain name is just your first step to online success. Search engine promotion is a continuing process that keeps traffic coming to your site.

    1. What is a domain name? A domain name is simply a system for providing a human-memorable name for a particular computer on the Internet. Properly speaking, computers have numerical addresses, sort of like a phone number. The domain name system provides a translation from a name to the appropriate number (sort of a directory assistance for the Internet). For example, www.ford.com is much easier than 198.108.89.236 for humans to type and remember.

    2. How do domain names work? When someone with a computer connected to the Internet wants to communicate with another computer, they need to tell their software what computer they want it to connect to. Computers on the Internet use IP addresses to locate one another. Say you ran Netscape on your computer and you want to look at the latest model of Ford car. Your computer can only connect to the Ford computer if it has the IP (Internet Protocol) address of it (which happens today to be 198.108.89.236). So far, this is similar to the telephone--you couldn't call your Ford dealership unless you knew the telephone number.
If you knew that www.ford.com was hosted on a machine with the IP address of 198.108.89.236, you could just type http://198.108.89.236/ into Netscape. Similarly, if you happened to remember or have written down someone's phone number you could just dial it. However, most people don't want to deal with these obscure numbers. The domain name system allows you to type http://www.ford.com into Netscape instead. The software on your computer then translates this name into the IP address for you and makes the connection. It's as if your phone were smart enough to transparently call directory assistance if you told it to call someone whose phone number you and it didn't know.
Here's how the translation works: When Netscape sees the name www.ford.com entered it asks the computer's network software to go get the corresponding IP address for it. Your computer's network software then asks your Internet Service Provider's DNS (Domain Name Server) for the IP address of www.ford.com. Your computer knows how to find the ISP's DNS because you gave it the addresses when you set up your connection to the Internet. The ISP probably gave you the IP numbers of its DNS to be entered into the network configuration. (More recent systems can set themselves up automatically, so these details are hidden.) In turn, the ISP's DNS asks Internic for the address of the DNS that manages all of ford.com. The ISP's DNS then contacts the Ford DNS and asks it for the IP address for www.ford.com. You can think of this as calling the phone company's directory assistance number and asking for the main number of Ford, and then calling the Ford operator to ask for the number a particular person. The IP address is then sent back to your computer, which gives it to Netscape, which contacts the www.ford.com computer directly via the IP address.

    3. Why do I want a domain name? There are several advantages to a domain name:
    • Your web service and e-mail addresses can be consistent (e.g., www.ford.com and [email protected]).
    • A domain name is shorter and more memorable than a URL under your ISP's domain name (e.g., www.ford.com vs. www.webpages-r-us.com/ford/).
    • Most importantly: You have the freedom to move your web hosting and e-mail at will from one Internet Service Provider to another without having to change your URL and email addresses. If your URL is www.webpages-r-us.com/ford/, you have to be a customer of webpages-r-us. If you become unhappy with the service you are getting and want to switch, you'll have to change your URL and email, throwing away all the work you did you publicize the first ones. If you have your own domain name, you're not stuck.

    Platforms and interfaces

    The MySQL Administrator in Linux

MySQL is written in C and C++. The SQL parser uses yacc and a home-brewed lexer, sql_lex.cc[10]
MySQL works on many different system platforms, including AIX, BSDi, FreeBSD, HP-UX, i5/OS, Linux, Mac OS X, NetBSD, Novell NetWare, OpenBSD, OpenSolaris, eComStation , OS/2 Warp, QNX, IRIX, Solaris, Symbian, SunOS, SCO OpenServer, SCO UnixWare, Sanos, Tru64 and Microsoft Windows. A port of MySQL to OpenVMS is also available.[11]
Libraries for accessing MySQL databases are available in all major programming languages with language-specific APIs. In addition, an ODBC interface called MyODBC allows additional programming languages that support the ODBC interface to communicate with a MySQL database, such as ASP or ColdFusion. The MySQL server and official libraries are mostly implemented in ANSI C/ANSI C++.
To administer MySQL databases one can use the included command-line tool (commands: mysql and mysqladmin). Also downloadable from the MySQL site are GUI administration tools: MySQL Administrator and MySQL Query Browser. Both of the GUI tools are now included in one package called tools/5.0.html MySQL GUI Tools.
In addition to the above-mentioned tools developed by MySQL AB, there are several other commercial and non-commercial tools available. Examples include Navicat Free Lite Edition or SQLyog Community Edition, they are free desktop based GUI tools and phpMyAdmin, a free Web-based administration interface implemented in PHP.

    [edit] Features

As of April 2009[update], MySQL offers MySQL 5.1 in two different variants: the MySQL Community Server and Enterprise Server.[12] They have a common code base and include the following features:
The MySQL Enterprise Server is released once per month and the sources can be obtained either from MySQL's customer-only Enterprise site or from MySQL's Bazaar repository, both under the GPL license. The MySQL Community Server is published on an unspecified schedule under the GPL and contains all bug fixes that were shipped with the last MySQL Enterprise Server release. Binaries are no longer provided by MySQL for every release of the Community Server.[13][14]
