Earth benders can lift up rocks from earth and then give it a some sort of energy push to drive it at enemy. This move can be seen on many fighting scenes throughout the series. Toph was able to manipulate earth without touching it on numerous occasions. For example can you remember the scene where Toph fought Dai-Le. She can destroy airborne Dai-Le knuckles just by making a move while not touching it. King Bumi was able to earth bending just with his face and many benders can lift huge objects without touching them. I think its more of a question of "bending power" rather than "requirement".</blockquote>
