    Where I'm now
It is said to use twice as memory size for the page file. But never more than 1GB :D S0 better use it @ 1GB.But since you have 1GB try paging file off.Because in XP it tries to write to page file when pass the Around 483 MB of Physical RAM used mark.I would say give 512MB.Let the RAM do more.:D

If you use a pagefile, it should be enough to hold the entire content of the RAM. The generally accepted size is 1.5 times the size of physical RAM.

Do not be mistaken; pagefile is not there for increasing the amount of virtual memory. They is a much important use of it - memory defragmentation. Again not to be mistaken it as same as defragging the hard disk :D

But in general XP environment(SP2) you can clearly see that they page it off even though a large physical RAM amount(60%) is available right? When I had 1GB on I ran without paging and god it was great.:DNow I have 512MB installed but to tell you paging starts @ around 300MB of physical RAM :S I am sure if you use 1.5 x as memory size it would be a disaster for sure.:D

would it be harm to RAM?

I've given to allocate da Space automatically from OS to reduce da load of RAM

mine is 'System Managed' 2.3GB on 2GB RAM

so, should I set it manually to 1.5xRAM?

Well, you have to set a larger pagefile if the virtual memory requirement is high. That's different. I was talking for someone who use XP and has 1GB of RAM or more. 1.5GB pagefile for Vista wouldn't be enough. True that.

Even if you have 100GB of RAM, the pagefile will be used. Because of that "important" reason. The most important thing for the pagefile "if you have lots of system RAM" is to use it for defragging the system RAM. Even though you might have a lot of RAM left, because you close and open programs, a lot of "holes" come up in RAM. A new program might not be able to use that RAM, because RAM is allocated "together"; say you have 10, 100MB holes = 1GB free RAM. But if a program needs 120MB to be allocated, it cannot be loaded!!! This is where pagefile comes into play. The OSes page out unused programs/data to pagefile, but when they page them back into RAM, they allocate them efficiently so those holes are minimized.

This is why my Windows RAM usage is around 1.8GB without pagefile, and 1.3GB with pagefile.

I don't know about you, but when I was playing Crysis Warhead without a pagefile, apps running in background started to crash. When I checked, the RAM usage was 3.95GB in task manager!!! I had to enabled the pagefile straightaway!!! I was like OMG!!! It never happened in Crysis vanila though :/
