Justice Asoka de Silva takes oath as new Chief Justice
(Lanka-e-News, June 08, 2009, 3.30 PM) Justice Asoka de Silva took oath as the new Chief Justice this morning (08) before the President Mahinda Rajapakse in President’s office to replace the retiring former Chief Justice Sarath Nanda Silva.
Chief Justice Asoka de Silva is the 32nd in the line up of chief justices in Sri Lanka. He is the most senior judge in the Supreme Court and his legal career extends for 37 years.
He entered the legal profession in 1972 and joined the Attorney General’s Department. He was promoted up to Deputy Solicitor General in the Department and appointed as an appeal court judge in 1995. He held the post of Chairman of the Court of Appeal. While working as a Supreme Court judge, he acted as a judge in International War Crime Tribunal too.
