There is a famous Sinhala saying that "Lajja nathikama mahamudali kamatah wadiya lokuilu" which literally means "being shameless is worse than getting the post of Muddliarship". This clearly describes how ordinary people in Sri Lanka looked at the people who betrayed the country for mere economical and political gains in the colonial era.
Firstly, they betrayed their religion and converted to satisfy the white regime and thereby getting undue favoritism and later they became the local agents (Mudhali, Aracchi, etc) of imperialism. They helped exploiting the common people of Sri Lanka for the greed of petty gains. In return, they became the privileged class in Sri Lanka by 1948, when the western imperialists left after extracting the true spirit of our country.
Life is easy for someone
shameless,
cunning as a crow,
backbiting and forward,
arrogant and corrupt,
but for someone who's constantly
scrupulous, cautious,
observant, sincere,
pure in his livelihood,
clean in his pursuits,
it's hard.
- Dhammapada (Malavagga)
When the people got their voting rights, these opportunists found that in order to retain their privileges, they need to transform their interface back into nationalistic form. Unlike in India, however, Sri Lankan dignified community change only their external interface in order to fool the common people while they retained their internal Anglican culture in line so that they can still deal with their western masters.
So they nominally transform back to Buddhism and some even change their attire to match national dress.
In the Bandaranayaka memorials days, it's the Bandaranayaka Samadhi decorated with national and Buddhist flags that get the eye of cameras and never to his father's tomb just few foots away decorated with catholic symbols.
Many of the cunning politicians were able to pretend as nationalist to get the voting of the ordinary people of Sri Lanka, while only a handful were really true patriotic in actions.
And there are some others who are even failed in pretending as Buddhists or genuine Sinhalese. They frequently mess up in the eye of the public, while trying to pretend as someone who care and know about our religion, culture and history.
From time to time, one character from these clans is hand picked by the western bureaucracy and dressed in either national attire or 'Ossarry' and pebble necklaces and procession in front of the nation as their national leader. There are NGO local agents and shameless media mafia to inflate those mere western Muppet characters as true intellectuals and great gentlemen or ladies.
And only after they juggle the voters and come to power, they start showing their true intentions and true masters.
Then the common people start weeping for their mistakes, but usually it is too late.
These traitors may come in various political parties and fractions, but they will all be united when they need to face a common obstacle in the form of true patriotic national leader.
Now its time to change the old adage in such that;
"Mudali paramparawala ewunta thamath rawetenaeka lajja nathi kamatath wadiya lokui"
It's a greater shame to get deceived by Mudali's clan (even by now).
