LTTE propaganda machine powered by Norway?

This post may seem out of topic because FILEnetworks blog is supposed to provide news about IT/software. Keep reading and you'll know why we posted it. (this may be old news for some of you)

Srilanka is plagued by a bunch of cowards who call themselves freedom fighters. The truth is that they are just a bunch of whiners who hide behind child soldiers and pregnant women. They are known for their cowardly suicide attacks and the so called baby brigade. Another one of their main strengths is the false propaganda machine which helps them win the hearts of Tamil Diaspora. www.tamilnet.com is the backbone of their propaganda network. It has been online since 1997 and has published many bullshit stories to discredit the Sri Lankan Army and the government.

So we wanted to know who hosted Tamilnet. We found the answer and it didnt surprise us at all. Finding the host is not a complicated process and you can do it yourself.

1. Ping Tamilnet.com to find Tamilnet's IP address.

To ping the web site, go to Start-->Programs-->Command Prompt. At the prompt, type ping www.tamilnet.com and press enter.

It should look something like this:



Notice the IP address 217.77.34.111

2. Find details about the IP address.

There are more than one ways to do this. There are various sites providing this service for free. The site we used was was ip2location. Go to http://www.ip2location.com/free.asp and provide the IP address 217.77.34.111 in search box and click on 'find location' button.

Results will be similar to this:

The piece of crap is hosted in Norway. LTTE's got some gay Norwegian friends it seems. We dont think such ass kissers are worthy of monitoring a ceasefire. Monitors are supposed to be impartial but these Nordic asses are cuddling with the tigers.

LTTE can kiss international ass as much as they like but Sri lanka wont be divided as long as the army stands its ground.

So what? Anyone can live in Norway and do whatever they want to as long as it is legitimate. Norway is countries that up holds democracy, and the Tamils have the rights to do as long as it is lawful. After all, you cannot expect this democracy in Sri-Lanka, where the founder and the editor of this legitimate news site ‘Taraki’ was murdered in daylight. And continued to murder all the Tamil news reporters members of the parliament.
Well the Tamilnet has been there even before the Norwegians came into the scene. So what the Norwegians had to do with this? Thank God for the Tamilnet if not the world would not know what’s really happening in side this so called Buddha Dharmista nation. Do you reckon that we should listen to all the craps that put in by your moda minister Kehelgamuwa? He is good for all the ‘modayas’ live in that island. And, you can keep eating your own ‘kewuns’

lolz. Are you saying tamilnet.com is unbiased? It may be unbiased for eelam gaylords. For us it's yet another bullshit propaganda scheme that is highly biased to the LTTE.

LTTE were provided with sat communication equipment by Norwegean govt (with the help of SL govt at the time). MBRL launchers that were provided to SLA were sabotaged while they were being airlifted by Norwegean Intelligence (later these were fixed by SLA and LTTE got their asses kicked). LTTE agents were allowed to access Norwegean Special Forces camps. And the list goes on..

considering above we have a fair right to suspect Norway's role as the truce monitor.

You could have picked a service that offered more information but that might not work out too well for you, would it?

Waving this little scrap of barely anything in the air as "proof" makes you just as guilty of propaganda as Tamilnet (and incidently the government sites you linked to.)

By the way, the government sites appear to be down as I write this. Maybe they should get the Norwegians to provide hosting for them. It's only fair.

LLS. Maybe you didn't get this the first time so I'll say this real slow.

1. I agreed that Tamilnet is a propaganda machine. That was never my point of contention.

2. I said "as I write this", so when you checked the sites almost 22 hours later maybe they were back up.

Incidentally, the FNL bunch isn't the first to do a DNS lookup on Tamilnet. Still they should get extra points for picking the service that gives them the least information.

Look, everyone knows that the Nowergians are biased towards Tamils. I don't know whether their sympathy towards Tamils makes them lean towards the LTTE or they are just greedy for Sri Lanka's percieved resources (i.e. offshore oil deposits). These are jsut two possible theories. The sympathy towards Tamils is understood because there are lot of Tamils in Norway, working in the cold north, where Nowergians themselves are reluctant to work, and contributing to their growth. Because of this demographic trend, the Tamils there actually form a potent voting bloc and so the govt there has to take them seriously. The point of this is to show that it will be more useful to find out why individuals (in this case, a nation) hold views that you oppose rather than just condemning them. It is the smart thing to do. If our govt or the JVP etc tried to understand these reasons, they may be able to come up with a smarter strategy to combat the Nowergians' bias towards the LTTE. Instead they're shouting themselves hoarse from the rooftops telling the Nowergian to go home and look stupid running to them to re-start the Geneva talks! What was the point of your article? Was it to draw attention to the fact that the Nowergians support the LTTE? Well if that was the case, you would have done yourself, and all of us, a greater favour by lucidly outlining your argument in a factual manner instead of ranting and raving, with a fair bit of filth interspersing the text. No one's going to take that sort of thing seriously mate!

Well, not really, but someone is trying very hard. I happened to be looking through my logs this morning and I noticed some unusual activity. Something a little more suspicious than my friendly Russian Mafia Spambot.

The Horde

This one seemed to be attempting a slightly obscure exploit which could be mildly described as malicious. Too bad Textpattern isn’t vulnerable to this exploit.

The range of IPs suggest a distributed attack (duh). They seem mostly random and any IP trying this exploit would be doing that and nothing else.

Except one.

The Anomaly

222.165.181.228 seems to be the only one I’ve found that seems to like browsing this site too. And yes, it is a Sri Lankan IP. Now it could be quite innocent. Maybe a fellow Kottu syndicatee’s computer is now a zombie and moonlights as a cog in this little net.

Or seeing as the site’s still up and functioning as it should it could be the attempts of someone much closer. Our newest neighborly pirates perhaps? Hell, they’ve stooped to mass comment spam. This would just be a step up for them. Or is it down? I can never figure that one out. Incidentally, more than half those hits on the Google search are from Nisadas.com because of the way recent comments are displayed on the sidebar. I originally thought that this would have been a spambot, but now it seems like a manual cut and paste job.

I’m surprised they’re still syndicated on Kottu. Half their content is just copied and pasted from somewhere else, and they spam the other Kottu users. And what they do is illegal, and the funny thing is that this last point is the least of what they’ve done so far.

I recently visited their site and flamed them just for fun. I was having so much fun it was almost embarrassing. Apparently they have a few script kiddies on staff so this could be their amateurish attempt at showing me some love.

I’ve already got recent backups and a new host to move to should they actually manage to pull something off. Once my curiosity was piqued I did some searching and found some other stuff which I’ll be keeping to myself for now. I’m sure I won’t have get my hands dirty again…

Or will I?
