Sri Lanka has been in a terrorist civil war since 1948 when they won their independence after more than 130 years of British Rule. When the British first took control of Sri Lanka, they found that the tea plantations were extremely profitable. Since the native Singhalese people would refuse to work for the British after 16 years of war for the country, the British imported slaves from India which were the Tamil people. They imported mass amounts of Tamil slaves to work the plantations. When Sri Lanka won independence in 1948, there was a struggle for power between the Sinhalese people and the Tamil people. The Singhalese people won government elections and, subsequently, the Tamils felt that they were being violated of their rights. This is where the root of war is initiated. The Tamil resistance went from a civil war of rights to a terrorist civil war for the establishment of the Independent Tamil State of Eelam when the Liberation Tiger Tamils of Eelam (LTTE) engulfed all other Tamil groups (there were around 20 independent Tamil groups) and began to use suicide bombs as a method in war. The LTTE has been recognized as part of the Top 5 most dangerous terrorist group by the FBI and a terrorist threat to the United States and 31 other countries. They perfected the suicide bomb, Invented the suicide belt, pioneered the use of women in suicide bombs and is the only organization in the world to assassinate two world leaders. LTTE leader Prabhakaran, refused to negotiate during peace talks and continued to send suicide bombers during ceasefires. Both sides are at fault. We are not arguing it is one side's fault. We are simply arguing for peace in the country. This is the FBI page dedicated to the LTTE: http://www.fbi.gov/page2/jan08/tamil_tigers011008.html
