A few more years to complete. But the works are going on. I was here last June. The amount of construction vehicles are quite enormous. These are parked on one side of the small road for several kilometers. They are allowed to move only at certain times of the day. To make matters worse the Army presence is huge too. They have their trucks. The entire area is very dusty and muddy.
But once it's complete the drive to Leh/Ladakh would be short and easy.
At the moment the drive to Kargil from Sonamarg itself is about 4 to 5 hours. The Zoji-La pass is narrow, no guard rails, but the road edges are concreted. If you get in between a herd of goats and lamb, it takes at least 20 mins to overtake each of the stock. There are about three people guiding them but hey are everywhere. Sometimes you see a small child in front carrying a newborn lamb, unable to walk distances. These guys have a very tough life.
