A 25-year-old teacher at an international school in Colombo and her husband have been arrested after police seized more than 1kg of crystal meth ('Ice'), with the total haul estimated to be worth over Rs. 20 million. The suspects were arrested during a raid in Madampitiya and have been remanded for 72 hours for further questioning under the Poisons, Opium and Dangerous Drugs Ordinance.

Only a very few international schools have qualified teachers. The rest hire anyone who's willing to chore for the minimum salary, and do a job with no future.
Students are sent there for two major reasons:
    1.They couldn't enter a proper gov school.
    2. They just need English to continue their businesses, especially Muslims.

But about English, except for the notes in broken English, they use Sinhala at school. Only a very few teachers actually speak English at all times.

All in all, if you don't go to a proper international school like CIS you end up with broken English (if you don't speak it at home, especially village businessman's kids etc), and a hatred towards gov schools.

I was fortunate enough to get into one of the top government schools in Sri Lanka after the Grade 5 Scholarship. My parents didn't even know about the school until I was selected.

Looking back, I probably could have tried to get both of my sons into the same school. Instead, we chose an international school. It wasn't because I think one system is better than the other, it was simply the choice that made the most sense for our family.

    Our reasons were:

    • It's very close to home.
    • Less dependence on changes in government policies.
    • Minimal paperwork and administrative hassle.
    • No frequent requests for money beyond the agreed school fees.
    • Strong English education. They now speak English almost like native speakers, so at home we deliberately speak Sinhala to help them become equally fluent in their mother tongue.
    • The school places a lot of emphasis on confidence, communication, and public speaking. Those were areas many of us from the government school system had to develop later in life.
    • The parent community has also been positive, with families who generally share similar educational values.
Every family has different priorities, and there's no single "right" answer. This is simply why we made the decision we did.

You need to migrate to a first world country and start working to get your head round how backward our public schools education is.. don’t get me wrong,I was one of them and there are some good but all and all we are so far behind compared to the world. So if you have the means to send your kid to a good international school, the difference is like day and night.
