IGP N.K. Illangakoon says that the police does not have any provisions to take action over infuriating statements and investigations can only be conducted only over the incident.

The IGP was responding to a journalist at a media briefing held in Colombo yesterday (June 20).

The journalist had queried as to why the bigwigs of the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) were not arrested despite continuing to make infuriating statements with regard to the Aluthgama incident.

Noting that the CID is conducting a full fledged investigation over the incident, the IGP has added that the law will be applied to anyone, regardless of organisation or stature.

Who gave permission?
The IGP also said that the BBS had conducted a rally in the Aluthgama town two months ago, with no problems at all.

However, the government had recently given the green light for a meeting of the Sasanarakshaka Bala Mandala, not the BBS, he added.

However, the clash had sparked after a group of vehicles linked to the rally had driven through the Dharga town after the rally.

He also said that 55 persons responsible for the incident - 48 Sinhalese and 7 Muslims have been arrested.
