Why Mars Needs Mom movie failed?

I think most of guys know about this 3D movie Mars Needs Mom.

I got to know that movie was a massive flop costing around $150 million to make but has earned only $40 million.

So I watched the movie today just out of curios. And need to say that it wasn't that bad at all. It had some funny and memorable scenes. Seriously there are more worse movies than this but they were highly successful at box office not this one though.

On the other hand the original book was very successful and have many positive reviews.

But still I don't understand why this movie was a flop. I know its not a great movie but its not that bad its worth watching in my opinion. It is the topic? Could it be that they didn't advertise it much? Or is 3D dead? Or did it cost too much and they shouldn't have use motion capture animation?

Yeah that's what confused me. Its not a bad movie it has rate 5 in both imdb and metacritic but is a massive flop. :S

I watched this movie at MC, well usually a animation movie is packed with humor and all an aspect which the movie did have but should have had more of, maybe that was part of the problem.

brilliant story, and good animation.I would have liked to see more humor in this movie.This film deserves more than 4/10,
