The worlds largest encyclopedia Wikipedia made their services unavailable for 24 hours sighting the new bill that allows the US government to control the internet and what people see. It would mean that sending an e-mail with a Mp3 file would also result in law suits and charges and then prison time.

SOPA (Stop online piracy act) and PIPA (Protect Intellectual Property act) would force a Sri Lanka/China type blocking system in the US. Where as Wikipedia will no longer be able to function correctly.

Why?

The law will require the website to review all comments/changes made! and in a case where the site linked (thats right!) or used copyright material or illegal words, the site will be sued and blocked (this is the current Sri Lankan system). Sites like Wikipedia that have millions of changes and updates to its content everyday would mean that Wikipedia will have to review all of them (Imagine that!).

The government would also filter words like "fuck" "shit" etc. meaning that educational content that might use such words will no longer be available. On top of this the data streams filtered would be E-mail so that means personal communication through the internet will also be affected.

So if you send a e-mail to a friend saying "fuck you" the e-mail will be blocked. Chatting streams like IRC, Yahoo, MSN etc. will also be filtered.

Is Wikipedia alone?

NO! Google and Mozilla are currently protesting with Wikipedia. USA version of Google has a black box covering its image as a sign of protest. We expect to see many other sites also doing such protests of the bill in USA.

Elakiri.com can also join the SOPA and PIPA Protest!
