The goal of this coursework is to write Wombat programs which will encode and decode 4-bit binary numbers using the Hamming (7,4) code: see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamming(7,4) for a definition of this code, and also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parity_bit for the definition of a parity bit which is also relevant.

Deliverables You should submit
1. Two Wombat programs (as text files), one for encoding and one for de-
coding
2. A description (pdf) of your programs
3. A description (pdf) of how you have tested them, and why you have chosen the test cases that you have.

Zip all these together and submit them as one text file.

Criteria
Basic The programs should correctly encode 4-bit binary, and correctly decode
correctly encoded 4-bit binary
Extra 1 The decoder should, in addition, correct errors in encodings with 1 error
Extra 2 The programs should make good use of subroutines
An implementation of the basic specification will get, at a maximum, 75%;
implementations with both extras will be capable of getting 100

Deadlines You should submit the coursework on the Wednesday of Week 12 (12 December): the vivas will be on 13 December, in the usual lab sessions.
