    Parakrama Samudraya

    4018-sri-lanka-polonnuwara-bathing-at-sunset.jpg

The huge lake upon whose northeastern shore Polonnaruwa rests is an inland sea known as the Parakrama Samudra.
The largest irrigation tank of Parakramabahu I. It was the life-blood of the ancient city in the same way that it is
the blood life of the religion today, providing water for the growth of thirsty rice crops and other foodstuffs.
Its 5,600 acres of water irrigated an estimated 18,200 acres of paddy land.

Five minor lakes were incorporated in the building of the Parakrama Samudra,
whose 8 1/2- mile bund contains 4 1/2 million cubic yards of earth. One thousand men employed in the hand labor of the period,
working 24 hours a day. could scarcely have completed the job in 12 years.

    Namal Uyana

    Namal Uyana

Naamal Uyana” is an extremely rare forest replanted with Ironwood Trees (Mesua ferara) in the 8th Century AD by King Dappula.
The Ironwood Tree is endemic to Sri Lanka and the replanted forest is over 200 acres in extent.
The Namal Uyana holds a rich animal and plant life with over 19 species of birds and rare species of lizards and 76 kinds of medicinal plants.

Though Namal Uyana, recently declared a National Heritage site, under the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWLC)
has become popular among Sri Lankans in recent years, it has a history filled with legend and romance that dates back to the Mogul period.
Historical records reveal that Mogul Emperor Shah Jehan built the 'Taj Mahal', his monument to undying love,
with the pink quarts mined from this unique mountain range. Research also reveal that the Emperor visited Sri Lanka to check on the quartz personally.

The quartz deposit spreading over 105 hectares is the largest in South Asia and is estimated to be 550 million-years-old.
The stones belong to a superior stone category and according to research,
the mineral known as silicon dioxide is the main component of the pink quartz.
Another archaeological investigation revealed it to contain 250 million-years-old plant fossils

    Mihintale

    Mihintale

In 247 B.C. Buddhism was first introduced to Sri Lanka on the mountain of Mihintale. Since then, various kings of Sri Lanka have blessed this rock with magnificent masterpieces of architecture. These include a hospital, a monastic complex, stupas and dagobas. While some of these structures are in an almost perfect state of preservation, some others are in complete ruin. The most spectacular of these is the Kantaka Chaitiya, which displays some of the finest architecture of the early Anuradhapura era.

The climb to the summit consists of almost a thousand steps.

    Aukana Buddha Statue

    Aukana Buddha Statue

    144551142_f4250c4e74_b.jpg

The Aukana Buddha was carved in the fifth century, during the reign of King Dhatusena from 459 to 477AD [the statue is ~ 1500 years old], who was responsible for many great works - including building the enormous Kala Wewa tank (or lake) at Aukana.

The statue looks towards the tank and, at a certain time, the eyes are level
    with the water.

It is beautifully upright with the tip of the nose exactly over a 'plumbline marker' between the feet. The pleats of the robe are seen as an artistic masterpiece of the time.

And while the right hand, the one that usually indicates meaning in Buddha statues, is in the gesture of 'the giving of the blessing', the symbolism of the left hand involves the gathering up of the robe in preparation to step over a river - a representation of the cycle of rebirths.

This is an incredibly beautiful and massive stupa. It's amazing at night, when it's lit up. So calm and peaceful.

The Ruwanwelisaya is a stupa in Sri Lanka, considered a marvel for its architectural qualities and sacred to many Buddhists all over the world. It was built by King Dutugemunu, who became lord of all Sri Lanka after a war in which the Chola King Elara, were defeated. It is also known as Mahathupa, Swarnamali Chaitya and Rathnamali Dagaba.

The stupa is also one of the Solosmasthana (the 16 places of veneration) and the Atamasthana (the 8 places of veneration in the ancient sacred city of Anuradhapura). The stupa is one of the world's tallest monuments, standing at 300 ft (92 m) and with a circumference of 950 ft (292 m).
