Colombo will be the site for the largest Bauddha Mandiraya in the world of Theravada Buddhism.
Work on the Sri Sambuddha Jayanthi Mandiraya built at a cost of Rs 330 million at the Thunmulla junction will be the largest building of its kind among countries practising Theravada Buddhism, Buddhist Cultural Centre Director Ven. Kirama Wimalajothi Thera said.

The centre will be the repository of all information connected to Theravada Buddhism. It will house the largest Buddhist library in the world and include a conference hall with a 600 seating capacity, a language laboratory, audio visual studio, and a section of Buddhist missionary activities and accommodation quarters etc.

Work on the building is expected to be completed to coincide with 2600th Buddha Jayanthi in 2011.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa donated the land for the building.

We hope to open the Sambuddha Jayanthi Mandiraya on Vesak Full Moon Poya Day in 2011, Ven. Wimalajothi Thera said. The Buddhist Cultural Centre which is responsible for overseeing the construction of the Sambuddha Jayanthi Mandiraya has organised a Buddhist Flag Day from May 15 to 21. The proceeds will be channelled to the building fund.

The Buddhist Cultural Centre has requested the co-operation of all in this endeavour. A flag is priced at Rs. 10.

Along with the Buddhist Flag week, the Buddhist Cultural Centre will hold a Buddhist book exhibition at the NationalArtGallery, he said.

The Buddhist Cultural Centre has appealed for contributions to make the project a success.
