He was certified by Guiness World Records as the world's oldest man when he was 111 years old.Tanabe, .Tanabe drank only milk and does not take alcohol and did not smoke.Tanabe was "the symbol of the Miyakonojo known as a city of long life." Following Tanabe's death, British World War 1 veteran Henry Allingham is officially the world's oldest's man at 113,Guiness World Records.
