Dear friend, A person attain Nibbana at the moment of enlightenment; after that he/she is called an Arhat. He/she is without Raga (greed...), Devesha (aversion...), Moha (delusion...); he/she is without Tanha (desire/craving...); he/she is without the feeling of self... This attainment is cauled "saupadisesa parinibbana" - because he/she is expereincing Nibbana while having the forms, feelings, etc. (i.e. while alive). When he/she passes away everything that causes suffering ceases to exist; this is called attainment of "anupadisesa parinibbana". What we generally call "parinibbana" is this... Passing away of Buddha was announced 3 months before the date; and impermanance of life is not a suprise to Buddhists (esp. rahatan wahansela). So the cartoon you've seen does not clearly depict Dhamma... All Sammasambuddha, Paccecabuddha and Arahat (i.e. followers) expereince Nibbana like that: first while being alive; then at death. Arhat is a follower (he/she attains Nibbana by practicing what disclosed by a Sammasambuddha). Sammasambuddha and Paccecabuddha are not followers; they figure out the Path on their own... Paccecabuddhas are not capable of guiding others to attain Nibbana; only a Sammasambuddha (like Gautama Buddha) and an Arahat (the follower who had completed the Path) can show others how to attain Nibbana. Sammsasambuddhas are rare but there've been 7 sammsambuddha for past 100 Kalpas (a kalpa is a time between successive re-creation of this universe). Paccecabuddhas are seen only in periods where Dhamma disclosed by Sammasambuddhas is not known in the world... Thousands of Arahats are among followers of a Sammsambuddha; any person entering the Sothapaththi (stream-enter) state in the Path eventually (within 7 lives) ends up being an Arhat. Aim of every lay and monk in Buddha Sashana is attaining Nibbana. All monks take the robes stating the reason for it as ending suffering in samsaraic existence... Answer for your question: All sammasambuddhas (including Sammasambuddha Gautama, whose Sasana is still present) and Paccecabuddhas attain Nibbana without external guidanace... Other arhats attain Nibbana by completing the Path disclosed by Sammsambuddhas... Following pessage is only to highlight why I said one cannot take another to Nibbata... Dhamma reveals how things happen because of causes; no one can take another to Nibbana. A Buddha (or Dhamma he discloses) guides the others... Path is the process of practicing Dhamma... Different causes and results arise in a person practicing Dhamma; this rsult in attainment of Nibbana... This fact can be appreciated only if one is aware of selfless nature of everything... For example all though we use the terms: "I", "me", "mine" we do not have anything that can be kept under our control. Even our mind is not ours; we do not see the reality of life because of the notion of "self"; but what we have within us is a mechanism (it's called "paticcasamuppada") which can be stopped if what needed for it to work can be removed... If what we call 'self' is just a delusion (which one gets rid of when attaining Nibbana) how can one take oneslef (or another) to Nibbana? So, Nibbana is result arising because of one completing the Path... Hope this explanation clarifies what you wanted to know... Theruwan saranai!
