The government is planning to remove Colombo University from the present locality and use the land for a five star hotel and the surrounding area for a casino complex. This is carried out on the policy of the government to create a super class commercial city within Colombo for the pleasure of local and foreign business magnates.
Accordingly, the government has planed to shift Colombo University and facilities in the surrounding area to Divulapitiya or land near Mahinda Rajapakse esplanade at Diyagama.
The government recently sold the area where Army Headquarters is to Shangri-La Hotels Group in Singapore for Rs.13870 million and the Army Headquarters to be built at Battaramulla would cost the tax payer Rs.38500 million say media reports.
