    Spacious Italian view

The space shuttle Endeavour orbits over Italy as it is docked with the International Space Station on May 19. The Endeavour is flying its last mission, and is scheduled to return home on June 1. This mission is NASA's next-to-last space shuttle flight. The agency will close out the 30-year program in July with one last flight by Atlantis.

    Violent ending

Georgian riot police use force to disperse an opposition rally in front of the parliament building in Tbilisi on May 25. Protesters in the former Soviet republic were demanding the resignation of Western-backed President Mikheil Saakashvili.

    Devastated by the storm

Kyle and Alicia Gordon embrace in what's left of their son's room on May 24 after losing their home to a devastating tornado that hit Joplin, Mo., on May 22. The huge EF5-rated tornado killed at least 125 people and destroyed a large portion of the town.

    Multi-tasking mom

Tiffany Goodwin, of Fredericksburg Va., robs her husband Allen, at right with glove, of a foul ball while holding her 8-month-old son Jerry on May 15. The family was attending a minor league baseball game between the Richmond Flying Squirrels and Harrisburg Senators at The Diamond in Richmond, Va. The Goodwins have season tickets for the Squirrels games. The image of Tiffany's catch became an Internet sensation.

    Into the wild blue yonder

Cadets toss their caps and cheer at the end of the Air Force Academy graduation ceremony on May 25 in Colorado Springs, Colo., as the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds fly overhead. About 1,000 cadets graduated and are starting their careers with the rank of second lieutenant.

    Eruption in Iceland

An aerial view taken on May 21 shows the eruption of the Grimsvotn volcano in Iceland. Ash clouds forced airport closures and hundreds of flight cancellations in Britain, Germany and elsewhere in northwestern Europe. The volcano's eruption over the weekend was more powerful than an explosion one year ago at another volcano, but caused far less chaos for travelers.

    Victim of terrorism

Rescue workers retrieve a body from the rubble of a police station that was leveled by explosives from a suicide car bomber in Peshawar, Pakistan, on May 25. The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, which killed at least five policemen and a soldier.

    After the rains

Houses and farmland in Vicksburg, Miss., remain submerged by flooding on May 23. Mississippi River floodwaters are gradually receding, but are likely to remain above flood stage for weeks. Heavy rains have left the rivers swollen and caused widespread flooding throughout the Southeast.
