The Fort Magistrate’s Court on Thursday (27) enlarged on bail two suspected hackers arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for a cyber crime against the Institute of Java Technology Studies. The case could be recorded as Sri Lanka’s first cyber crime to be solved.
Chief Magistrate Rashmi Singapulli granted bail to the two suspects, who were arrested by Inspector Sampath Senaratne and his team on Tuesday, in one million rupees each and impounded their travel documents.
At the time of arrest the CID had found all relevant evidence in both suspects’ computers which were also taken into custody.
According to sleuths, the investigations are ongoing to capture others who may be involved.
Institute of Java Technology Studies, Chairman Dr. Ishantha Siribaddana told ‘The Island’ that a year ago, two students from the Moratuwa University and Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) had hacked into the Java World Congress and Exhibition website which was officially launched by Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa.
The hackers were identified as *************** of the Moratuwa University and ****************** from the SLIIT of Malambe.
He said, the system had been inundated with fraudulent information and the website duplicated.
When ‘The Island’ queried about safety measures taken to reduce such incidents, Dr. Siribaddana said that every measure was taken, but the two masterminds had bypassed the security systems and taken advantage.
