The problem is this. 3 wheelers in Sri Lanka (most of them) are owned and driven by people who we consider as lower class people of society. They have no discipline and no shame. These people will do anything for their own benefit. I am also a person who owns a vehicle but I use public transport to work, so don't charge that I am a "rich" person trying to get rid of 3 wheelers. But I support the ban of 3 wheelers because roads and society will be much safer without them. Ban should not be overnight, but first ban import and registration of them. Then gradually introduce taxi service like nano cabs where first the people and then the 3 wheel drivers will shift for service and work. Finally ban them also keeping in mind an exit strategy for owners (e.g. refurbish them and export them to African countries)

I never mean to lose their jobs, those fellows should be given motor cars. thats the plan of government now. they first going to ban in colombo. all tuktuk fellows should be given redeem a motor car. (like nano)

3 wheelers are very economical vehicles, specially new big diesel stuff. I get to know they are doing 38-40Km/L and 4 ppl can ride with luggage. Normal Maruti can do 17 with same 4 ppl and luggage
So for 100Kms -
Diesel 3 wheel costs Rs. 222.50
Petrol Maruti costs Rs. 805.9
Cost of maintenance of a 3wheel is negligible compared to a family car.
So as a developing country we should stick with economical methods for transport.
We should educate 3 wheel drivers and add special set of rules and big fines for abuse of road rules.
As an example, there are special set of rules for heavy vehicles and lorrys when traveling in Colombo city.
So for 100Kms -
Diesel 3 wheel costs Rs. 222.50
Petrol Maruti costs Rs. 805.9

Nano cabs (all cab services who use nano cars) charges are resonable compared with some of 3 wheeler chages, plus most of them are air conditioned. and safer.

However, I havent seen bikes, cars, vans, cabs, buses and lorries being driven following all the road rules either.
Though I do agree on that comment about bikes being a bigger headache on the roads. People on bikes drive even worse than 3wheelers, regardless of their educational level or society class.
