Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov to Oppose Putin in Presidential Election
Mikhail Dmitrievitch Prokhorov (Russian: Михаил Дмитриевич Прохоров; born 3 May 1965) is a Russian billionaire entrepreneur and owner of the American basketball team, the New Jersey Nets. After graduating from the Moscow Finance Institute he made his name in the financial sector and went on to become one of Russia's leading industrialists in the precious metals sector. While he was running Norilsk Nickel, the company became the world's largest producer of nickel and palladium. He is currently chairman of Polyus Gold, Russia's largest gold producer, and President of ONEXIM Group.
In 2011, Prokhorov capped a year of higher-profile political activity in Russia with the December declaration that he would run as an independent in the 2012 presidential elections. Russian prime minister and former president Vladimir Putin was the favorite in the race at the time of Prokhorov's announcement.
Prokhorov is the third richest man from Russia and the 32nd richest man in the world according to the 2011 Forbes listing with a fortune estimated at $18 billion.[1]
