Police used tear gas after more than 5,000 farmers demonstrated in Dambulla town today protesting against government’s decision to implement the law on use of plastic crates to transport vegetables.

Police and protesters clashed while at least two police vehicles were damaged.

But, in Colombo Minister of Consumer Affairs Jhonston Fernando said that despite protests the government will not change its decision.

As a result of the protest in Dambulla all traffic on the A9 road as well traffic heading to Trincomalee and Batticaloa have been held up for several hours.

Minister Fernando said that if the traders in Manning Market do not cooperate, they will use the Narahenpita Economic centre as the wholesale distribution point from tomorrow.
