After Iran's warning to the U.S. not to send its ships to the gulf, U.S. has deployed more ships to the area.
Iran also threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping lane for the world's oil supply.
The U.S. has said it would not allow Iran to block the Strait, calling it a "red line" for the U.S. military. General Martin Dempsey, the top U.S. military officer, said over the weekend that it would be a "intolerable act."
"Yes, they can block it ... But we would take action and reopen the Straits," Dempsey told a television talk show.
U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff General Norton Schwartz said on Monday they are ready to support other U.S. military assets in the area.
