United States senate is to pass the SOPA and PIPA acts in the US on the 24th Of January 2012. SOPA stands for Stop Online Piracy Act and PIPA stands for Protect Intellectual Property act.
These acts are said to give power to the US government to to immediately block websites that are violating copyrights. Linking to such sites would also be punishable by law. The bills also allow data stream censoring which means unencrypted data such as e-mails can be filtered.
The bills will also force forums in the US to review posts as linking to pirated content will be deemed illegal and the site will be sued if they do not remove it. It would also be illegal to share MP3 files through e-mails.
Currently technology giants and organizations such as Google, Yahoo!, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, AOL, LinkedIn, eBay, Mozilla Corporation, Roblox, Reddit,[115] Wikipedia[116] and the Wikimedia Foundation,[117] in addition to human rights organizations such as Reporters Without Borders,[118] the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), the ACLU, and Human Rights Watch appose it.
WHY?
Websites like Facebook, Wikipedia, Google, Yahoo, cannot possibly review all their posts and changes done by users or robots. Asking them to do so is a technically impracticable. If someone posted a warez (cracked software) link on Facebook, US government will have the ability to shut down/block Facebook pending a court case!
WHAT CAN I DO TO STOP IT?
The President of United States has the power to Veto any bill if he feels that it is not correct. Demand Progress is a Online petition organization that is accepted by the US law.
You can sign your petition asking President Obama to veto these bills by going here :
