Police raid news websites

Sri Lankan police raided the shared office of two news websites arresting nine people, mostly journalists.

Computers and phones from the office of Sri Lanka Mirror and Sri Lanka X News were also confiscated by police, witnesses told the BBC.

It is unclear on what grounds it was raided. Correspondents say the websites support the political opposition.

Police have yet to comment on the raid, which comes amid growing fears for media freedom in Sri Lanka.

The office of the two websites has been sealed. Police have also raided the home of a senior journalist at the Sri Lanka Mirror.

"This is clear proof that media freedom is dead in Sri Lanka," opposition MP Ravi Karunanayake told BBC Sinhala.

Earlier this week five Tamil-language news websites were blocked.

In November last year several Sri Lankan websites were temporarily blocked for "maligning the president".

UNP MP Mangala Samaraweera speaking to the Daily Mirror said this was an indictment on the free media of the country.

“All they told us was that they had information to believe that there was anti- government materials. Obviously we are an opposition website and there would be definitely anti-government materials.

“The witch-hunt against the free media continues,” he said.

However, the police said only two people were taken into custody from the Sri Lanka Mirror office.
