THE OFFSPRING OF A PIG IS A PIG
(English Translation of Sinhala a letter to the Nation)
A few days ago, at a public location, Minister Mervin Silva’s son Malaka Silva and his group of gangsters, assaulted a Major of the Sri Lanka Army and his buddy, a Non Commissioned Officer, who were on duty at this location and it was reported that the officer’s Army issue service pistol was grabbed by Malaka Silva and his gangsters and robbed on that occasion. The injured Major who is hospitalised in his statement reported that, at the time of this incident, the son of a late Minister was also present at the time.
Though the injured Major is still hospitalised, there are no reports of either Malaka Silva or any of his group of gangsters who assaulted the Major being arrested by the Police.
On the following day, the stolen pistol was handed over to the police by someone who claimed to be Malaka Silva’s driver and in his statement to the police, he has said that he had picked it up from the location of the incident. Malaka Silva and his gangsters may not know that it is an offense to retain a fireman belonging to the military even overnight. That’s an indication of their education. However, it is surprising that the Police failed to arrest the gangster who surrendered the weapon to the police.
According to the statement issued to the media by the Police Spokesman, before making an arrest proper investigations should first be made. There appears to be not much of a difference between the Police Spokesman’s above statement and a previous statement made by the CID that the historical artefacts stolen from the National Museum were stolen by a Maligawatha drug addict in order to finance the ‘resurrection’ of the LTTE. The above statement by the Police Spokesman is a confirmation that there will be a remiss on the application of the law viz-a-viz Malaka Silva and his gangsters. Either the police are impotent or there are impotent people in the police. It is not necessary to remind the IGP, that, instead of canvassing in the Kahawatha area during the Sabaragamuwa election, it is the duty of the IGP to arrest Malaka Silva and his gangsters, remand them and then carry out due investigations.
At the time of the assault by Malaka Silva and his gangsters, some might question as to why the Major did not draw and use his weapon which is officially issued to him by the Army. No doubt the Major would have very well known that if he had fired but one bullet, he would have been felled by a hail of bullets from the weapons in the hands of Malaka Silva and his gangsters. Therefore, he perhaps resigned himself to be assaulted and to be hospitalised. Had he utilized his weapon in self-defence, he would have entered into the annals of history as the person who extended a supreme service to the nation and Sri Lankan society. However, he may just as well have entered history like Lakshman Premachandra. Though he was assaulted, the fact that he lived to tell the tale is indeed a consolation.
This is not the first time Malaka Silva has enacted such gangsterism. However, he has acted enough. If Malaka Silva is foolish enough to assault an Army Officer on duty and rob his weapon, it is difficult to fathom as to what he might do in the future. Malaka Silva has so far not eaten from a hotel which served ‘parripu’. However, he has now arrived at the doorstep of that hotel which does serve ‘parripu’. There is absolutely no doubt that in the near future, he will have his fill of ‘parripu’. By assaulting a military officer, he has displayed what he has got from his birthright. Today, it’s not only the assaulted officer’s blood that is boiling but that of the three hundred thousand servicemen who are in uniform. Amoung the three hundred thousand servicemen, there are those who are more fearsome than Malaka Silva, as well as, those more foolish than Malaka Silva. Therefore, it will not be long before, Malaka Silva will be dining at the hotel which serves ‘parripu’ and that too in no small measure. There are plenty of examples of this in the history of the military.
Just like Malaka Silve there are plenty of drug dealers and others who surround themselves with gangsters and terrorise the populace. Unfortunately, in their groups of gangsters, there are also retired servicemen. That is their job. I tell these retired ex-servicemen that it is better to beg to feed and upkeep their families than to serve these gangsters, for finally, its they who will face the gallows and not their masters. A good example being the Udathanwilla massacre. While their political masters and their sons went squat free, it is Lt. Wijerthna and his servicemen who are now incarcerated in the Bogambara prison.
When Duminda Silva’s gangsters were brought to the courts, leading the group arrested was a retired soldier named Bandara, who distinguished himself in combat during the operations in the Northern battlefields. Meanwhile, Duminda Silva is hiding in Singapore under state patronage. Therefore, all the ex-servicemen who are serving and protecting such gangsters and miscreants of society, without disgracing the uniform they wore, should distance themselves from their employers or be prepared to someday face the gallows.
Malaka Silva has a very important lesson to learn. During the 88/89 period, when the entire country was terrorised by the mere ‘chit’ edict of the JVP Deshapremeen, the turning point to their reign of terror was when they began to lay their hands on the military (and their families). The destruction of Rohana Wijeweera and the Deshpremee began from that point onwards. Only Somawansa Amarasinghe survived the military onslaught and that too because he was helped to flee the country by a military officer.
Finally there is something that the Army and the Commander of the Army should be reminded of. Selling vegetables at markets and laying brick at junctions will not protect the status of the soldier. The soldier is owned by the Army. The Army is owned by the entire country. This is the Army of the great Rawana. The Army of Dutugemunu, Parakaramabahu, Wijayabahu. This is the Army that finally left the world’s most dangerous terrorist in his lion-cloth (Amudaya). To protect the status of this illustrious army and its soldiers is the duty and responsibility of the Commander of the Army. The Army Commander and every solder must realise and understand that for the Army, “There are no others for us but us”

the hierarchy of the military structure goes as Gota , and his henchmen (the army commander)
