Which pill would you choose, the red or the blue? Is ignorance bliss, or is the truth worth knowing, no matter what? After watching The Matrix we are impressed by the action and special effects, and also besieged by questions. Is it possible that we ourselves are prisoners of the Matrix? Is this a Christian film? A Buddhist film? There is no spoon?

    :cool::cool::cool:

Since da first time I watched it, I got obsessed, just like it happened with The X-Files. The Matrix movies have both Christian & Buddhist stuff & others as well. I read a lot about those things in those days. One theory is dat "Neo" is kinda "Christian Bodhisatwa/Buddhist Jesus". Because, he's considered as the "Savior of the world" by the others like the Jesus. & he come back in movies to help others, like a Bodhisatwa in Buddhism, who delay his own enlightenment to help others. Think about the Agent Smith. He's kinda represent the ignorance & the desire in your mind. You have to fight with it. Because, it always tries to abuse you. Have you ever thought about da last fight Neo had with Agent Smiths?. Even da stormy & rainy environment depicts a big fight. Which fight?. Fight against the ignorance & desire of his own mind. When I was watching, I compared it with the "මාර පරාජය" in Buddhism. How similar these concepts to the ones in Buddhism & the enlightenment of Buddha?. How many similar films have been made since Matrix?. Like you said, besides it's action & tech stuff, Matrix is above a lot of movies of it's genre, because of it's philosophies. These subjects are dicussed on the Internet overwhelmingly.

    Thanks :)

Yeah, maybe a bit. :) But I cannot agree with all. I briefed what I've read & what I've observed together. But, if you carefully see, you'll notice them. But the problem is, we should already have the knowledge required when we're going to see a movie. Hence, we understand it better. I've mentioned more references to Buddhism in da movie than any other, since that's what I'm mostly familiar with. But, sure they've included a lot of references to others as well. But, I cannot ignore da fact that there is a main theme running which is hugely influenced by Buddhism. A lot of dialogues in da movie also back dis fact while Wackowskis also admitted the influence of eastern & buddhist doctrines on da movies. Think about "Cloud Atlas". It also has a touch of some Eastern stuff. "Looper" is another movie which I noticed for some similar reasons. & dat director also talked about eastern influence. I'm pretty sure dat Wackowskis also did it knowingly.

It was great. I liked the presence the best. It had a nice plot too, a full round story. Theme is kind of overdone though. I have seen so many movies about misunderstood, misfits, underdogs yada yada. So it's nothing new. Nevertheless it was entertaining. And this film is not for children, suitable for teen mostly. Watch it guys!

PS: LOL at that reveal at the end.

AFAIK wachowski's refused to participate to any media interviews. They said movie should speak for ourself.
But yeah most proly movies main theory is based on Buddhist philosophy. Which is Human are trapped inside a Matrix and have no proper sense of their surroundings hence all the pain.

But that thing with මාර පරාජය was kinda far fetched. And I think it is a mistake to describe all the elements with Buddhism. But Yeah I dont disagree with completely :)

main theme running which is hugely influenced by Buddhism.

    :yes::yes::yes::yes:

There were six versions of Neo. The present eon has six Buddhas. Number six is due to arrive.

The Matrix is an illusion. This version of Buddhism says that our current way of life (called Samsara) is an illusion.

Neo sees beyond the Matrix and help others escape. The Buddha pretty much does the same thing.

Those who are aware of the Matrix have varying degrees of powers. Those on the path to enlightenment gain various powers such as levitation.

Once he sees the Matrix fully, Neo has the ability to fly, see people in code, see the future etc. The Theravada version of Buddha too, has these abilities (he cannot see code, but he apparently sees 'auras' of people).
The Matrix is cyclic. "Samsara" is cyclic.

    Showing the Way

Morpheus: I'm trying to free your mind, Neo. But I can only show you the door. You're the one that has to walk through it.

Shakyamuni Buddha: I have shown you the methods that lead to liberation but you should know that liberation depends upon you.

Sharmar Rinpoche:The Buddha said that he can show the way, but it is through personal efforts alone that enlightenment is attained.
    — The Three Main Approaches in Buddhism: An introduction

The Buddha's goal, then, is to enable us to know that freedom which we've always had, to help beings experience the open, clear, unobstructed nature of mind.
    — Ngöndro: The Four Preliminary Practices of Tibetan Buddhism

    The Precious Human Life

Morpheus: What you see? Businessmen, teachers, lawyers, carpenters... The very minds of the people we are trying to save. [---] You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system that they will fight to protec it.t

Meditation on the 16th Karmapa: We recognize our precious opportunity in this life, that we can benefit countless beings through the methods of a Buddha. Few people ever meet Diamond Way teachings and even fewer are able to use them.

    Causality

Morpheus: Do you believe in fate, Neo?
    Neo:No.
    Morpheus: Why not?
Neo:Because I don't like the idea that I'm not in control of my life.

Oracle: You'll remember you don't believe in any of this fate crap. You're in control of your own life, remember?

Lama Ole Nydahl:Karma means cause and effect, not fate. The understanding that each of us is responsible for our own lives makes it possible to consciously generate positive impressions which bring happiness while avoiding the causes of future suffering. Positive states of mind may be effectively strengthened through the methods of the Diamond Way, while negative impressions waiting to mature, can be transformed into wisdom.
    — What is karma?

    Dissolving Stiff Ideas

Neo: What are you trying to tell me? That I can dodge bullets?
Morpheus: No, Neo. I'm trying to tell you that when you're ready, you won't have to.

Gampopa: Once you recognize that sights and sounds are magical illusions, you don't need to accept or reject.

I saw some good acting from Denzel Washingnton. He sure deserves dat Oscar nomination. If you get bored, Denzel might be da only thing which can make you watch it through.
