Arjuna may contest in Sri Lanka Cricket election

Arjuna Ranatunga has said that he will make a decision by next week on if he will contest in the upcoming election at Sri Lanka Cricket.

The former Sri Lankan captain, who served as chairman of the board in 2008 before being removed by the sports ministry the same year, said that several stakeholders at the board and former players have requested that he run for president.

Ranatunga is currently an opposition party MP, and he says he has no faith in elections conducted by the board.

"In the past, there have been so many instances where politics has got involved with cricket. Since I’m in the opposition, it might get worse if I contest and [I'm] elected, so there is a lot to think about before I decide," Ranatunga told the Chinese news agency Xinhua.

The 49-year-old said that he will seriously contemplate running if it is guaranteed that president Mahinda Rajapaksa's government will not interfere in the affairs of the board and the election.

The last election, held after a seven-year period that witnessed government-appointed interim-committees take charge of the board, reeked of government interference, critics say. Many of the key positions within the board were filled uncontested by individuals close to the ruling party and Sri Lankan president Rajapaksa.

The annual general meeting will take place on the March 30, 2013.
